ALPINE PEAKS, Placer County — October 31, 2026. Trail users near Ward Canyon have a proposed local improvement project to watch. Placer County’s Fiscal Years 2026–27 through 2030–31 Capital Improvement Plan identifies a Ward Creek trailhead project under the North Tahoe Recreation Access Plan.
County officials have identified parking pressure, erosion, vegetation impacts and recreational access as issues for trailheads around North Lake Tahoe. The longer-term access plan proposes improvements at multiple sites, such as better parking surfaces, signs and erosion control.
What is actually funded?
The capital plan places Ward Valley in fiscal 2026–27 among the next proposed work sites but states explicitly that no funding had yet been secured for the Ward Creek trailhead improvements in that fiscal year. County staff planned to pursue several grants, including potential support from the Lake Tahoe Restoration Act and the North Tahoe Community Alliance. Those prospective sources are not awards.
The broader multi-site North Tahoe Recreation Access Plan has an estimated $1.25 million total project cost and an $819,252 funding gap in the published table. Those are program-wide figures, not the cost of the Ward Creek location by itself.
Why Alpine Peaks residents should follow the plan
Ward Creek is part of the local recreation network used by residents and visitors. Changes to parking, access and trail maintenance could affect nearby roads and traffic. Until the county publishes an award, construction contract or closure notice, residents should not treat the trailhead as closed or under active construction.
