ALPINE PEAKS, Placer County — October 31, 2026. The Alpine Peaks Residents’ Association has published an unusually specific warning about wildfire evacuation from Ward Canyon: do not assume the Sherwood/Alpine forest-service route is a safe or available way out.
The association says it has consulted with North Tahoe Fire about that alternate route and describes it as an extremely unfavorable last-resort option rather than a reliable evacuation plan. Its guidance emphasizes that each fire is different, and people must follow real-time directions from law enforcement and emergency officials.
Practical preparation
The association urges residents to sign up for Placer Alert, verify that their contact details remain current, prepare an emergency go bag and establish a household evacuation plan. During an active incident, use the county’s official maps, alerts and instructions rather than information passed through an informal group chat.
Homeowners can request an educational inspection
North Tahoe Fire offers free, grant-funded educational defensible-space inspections for eligible homeowners who want help assessing vegetation and fire exposure. The district differentiates these from inspections tied to construction permits or short-term rental permits, which may carry cost-recovery fees. The free educational program does not guarantee that a property will pass formal permit inspection.
People with mobility difficulties, elderly neighbors and households with animals should plan early. Do not wait for all roads to become crowded; leave when directed, or earlier if required by personal circumstances and permitted by officials.
